Pitts: That's a Rather Unfortunate Name

During the period fall 1992 to spring 1994 I was a psychotherapy patient of Suzanne M. Pitts, M.D., a psychiatry resident at the George Washington University Medical Center.

On one occasion I said to her, "Pitts, that's a rather unfortunate name." She seemed to be insulted. It's actually a line from the movie, The Dead Poets' Society. Like the boys in the movie I attended an all-boys high school. The movie had a personal resonance for me.

Dr. Pitts said I was paranoid. But then, she was a psychiatrist.

There are Muslims who would say I was an infidel.

There are Christians who would say I was a heathen.

Dr. Pitts was a psychiatrist, so she said I was paranoid.
